Green Neighbours 21 Events Recap

Cycling group

Our group of Sunday morning cyclists had our second ride on July 28.  This time we headed down to the lake via Shaw Street, Trinity-Bellwoods Park and Strachan Avenue.  We ended at Trillium Park where a large yoga event was just about to begin.  An appropriately chill ride ended with a trip to a St. Clair West coffee shop.  This was our last cycle of the summer, as we take a break and prepare for our September 29 cycle (see below).

Walking group

The Sunday evening walkers have had two walks since our last newsletter.  On July 21, we traced the path of a lost river- Garrison Creek, from southeast of Oakwood and Davenport to the headwaters near Wychwood and Valewood Avenues.  Our walkers got to discover pathways in their own neighbourhood built around the lost river, but sometimes the building went directly over it.

On August 5, John Cummings of Friends of Cedarvale led an intrepid group of walkers through a tour of Cedarvale ravine. The skies opened up at about 6:30 and it didn’t stop until 7:15 p.m.  We had the ravine almost to ourselves and the ravine shone. This was our last walk of the summer, but we’ll be back in the fall.

Wheeling Through Toronto- A Bicycle tour of the west end- Sunday September 29

Albert Koehl has written a wonderful book called Wheeling Through Toronto, published by University of Toronto Press, covering over 130 years of bicycling history here.  I did not know that cycling here was first a common recreational activity of politically powerful well-off riders, and then a utilitarian mode of transport for the masses.  We had several bicycle factories in Toronto, and politicians who listened very carefully to the demands of cyclists.  Who knew?

On September 29, Albert will be leading a bicycle tour of the west end of the city and show us some landmarks from Toronto cycling history. The tour will begin at 10 a.m. in the Bloor and Spadina area, with the precise starting point to be confirmed.  It will proceed up to Weston, and then back downtown through the Junction area, and end at 2 p.m.  The event will be family-friendly and mostly along bike lanes.  Participants can join where they like and ride for as long as they like.

The tour will be sponsored by Green Neighbours 21 and Seniors for Climate, a coalition of 6 seniors climate organizations, who will be holding over 50 events across Canada on October 1.  Including one in Toronto.  If you are interested in participating either for the whole ride or part of it, please send an e-mail to gn21toronto@gmail.com.  We’ll keep you informed of the details.

Walking the Rouge- October 6

Green Neighbours Network is organizing a guided tour of the Rouge National Urban Park on Sunday morning October 6. We are able to provide an EV lift to a few members of Green Neighbours 21 who would like to join us. Thanks to Lee Adamson for setting this up.  If you are interested, please send an e-mail to gn21toronto@gmail.com. Further details about the walk will be available soon. Space is limited.
